The Language of Flowers in Asian Art

Docent talk on the symbolism of six significant blooms in Asian art

From the refined to the revolutionary, find meaning in every bloom.

In Asian art, flowers speak a language all their own. The enduring importance of these flowers is shared through gloriously gilded screens, sleek lacquers, rare porcelains, striking sculptures, and pop art.

Delve into the symbolism of six significant blooms: the lotus, plum blossom, cherry blossom, chrysanthemum, tulip, and rose, and the messages they convey.

This talk is presented by Asian Art Museum docent Peggy Mathers and features objects from the Museum’s collection.
