* Saturday, August 26, 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Gallery Route One and the Dance Palace are proud to present the Latinx Photography Project documentary at the Dance Palace.

Join us as we celebrate this acclaimed bi-lingual film about a cross-cultural photography project Gallery Route One began in 2003. Hear from the filmmaker, Alejandro Palacios, and the participants.

Enjoy tamales and traditional drinks and raise a glass with us to celebrate the film’s launch on PBS on September 8 during Latino Heritage Month.

Filmmaker Alejandro Palacios had seen a Latino Photography Project exhibit at Gallery Route One in 2017, and a year later, proposed making a documentary about the project. He presented what turned out to be a first draft of the film at the Dance Palace in the spring of 2019.

In the following year, he received valuable feedback from panels at an Ethnography Film Conference and a California Arts & Humanities program. He focused on individuals in more depth, and during the pandemic, thoroughly re-mastered his work, giving prominence to the voices and lives of the Latino participants.

The film shows how learning photography added another dimension to the lives of the participants, engaging their imaginations, and deepening their connection to the natural world, and to their own culture and community. Their images are intimate glimpses into the cow barns, cheese factories, and hard work, but also show the vibrancy of the people, the families, in celebrations and sacred rites.

Over eighteen years, their images have been shown in many venues and local publications and have formed a bridge between the Anglo and Latino cultures. The two cultures meet on that bridge, sharing food, music, and dance, at exhibits and cross-cultural celebrations.

Art does not solve all problems, but the two communities know each other better — both our differences and our common humanity — and the life of our community is enriched by all of us sharing it.
