Laura Roebuck

I am an abstract painter in oils and mixed media influenced by abstract expressionist, color field, minimalist, and arte povera painters. Through intuition and movement, I explore the interplay of color, shape, and texture, using palette knives, paintbrushes, and assorted household and construction tools. I make paintings of varying sizes; however, creating large-scale work is what excites me most. My process is primarily unconscious, yet coherent. When I approach my canvas, it is often without a specific plan, and the evolution of the piece is unpredictable. In the studio, something will initiate the process; it may be a color, a shape, a tool, a thought: a mark, a gesture, a stroke of paint.

I was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. I received a B.A. in psychology and a minor in dance from Boston University and an M.D. from Case Western Reserve University in 1992. I moved to San Francisco to pursue a career as a psychiatrist and practiced in the Bay Area for 13 years. My first art studio was in San Francisco’s Mission district. In 2008 I moved my studio to Marin County, where I now live and maintain my art practice.
