Amanda Addleman

Musician/Band

Amanda Addleman is a Bay Area vocalist, pianist, composer, arranger, and educator. Addleman’s musical approach is one well-steeped in a reverence for the traditions of great jazz singers and instrumentalists of the last century. Yet her sound represents an informed departure from the tropes and fixations of earlier generations of improvisational musicians. In fusing the spirit of contemporary folk, rock, and pop composition and performance stylings, Addleman’s style blossoms with a freedom from genre restraint, while maintaining a consistent and cohesive sound that still maintains an obvious reverence for those who came before. Addleman earned a B.M. at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, followed by continued studies with opera singer and vocal educator Lee Strawn, and renowned jazz vocalist and educator Tierney Sutton. In her own educational work, Addleman maintains a full private studio roster, heads the Sir Francis Drake High School vocal department, and teaches a regular schedule at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley, CA. It is her mission to both share her perspective on the music through performance and to educate and expose musicians of all levels and backgrounds to the tradition, so that the art form may continue to evolve and thrive.

Chris Adessa

Chris Adessa is a representational fine artist whose art studio overlooks the San Francisco Bay in the historic ICB building in Sausalito, California. Born in New York State, she was drawn to the San Francisco Bay Area decades ago for its magnificent beauty and gentle climate. Her latest series is called Everyday Sacred. She celebrates the extraordinary in the ordinary, painting portraits of commonplace, enduring objects: a light bulb, a paintbrush, a pile of books, a cardboard box … in a finely nuanced monochrome palette. They speak volumes quietly. “Using a black and white palette reminds me of photographs in black and white that have incredible subtlety and detail. I find you can take in an image more completely when the color is stripped off and you see the form and relate the function at the same time." These objects are timeless and she seeks to portray their innate beauty … and she invites her viewer to do the same. Her work has been shown in museums and galleries across the United States, published in books, and can be found in collections internationally.

Mustafa Alami

My name is Mustafa Alami and I am a Sausalito based illustrator and designer. I am constantly sketching small images. Every now and then, an image becomes a painting, a print, a card, a story, or an app. I paint with acrylic paint on canvas or wood. My art prints are printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag Metallic paper with archival inks. The natural white cotton paper has a special silvery-shimmering surface finish.

Peg Alford Pursell

Peg Alford Pursell is the author of Show Her a Flower, A Bird, A Shadow (ELJ Editions, March 2017), a collection of hybrid prose and microfictions praised by Antonya Nelson, Joan Silber, Peter Orner, Margot Livesey, and others. Her work has been published in Permafrost, The Cortland Review, the Journal of Compressed Arts, and Vestal Review, among many others. She’s the recipient of many awards and honors, including the SC State Fiction Award, The South Carolina Academy of Authors Award, and the Flannery O’Connor Award for Fiction shortlist. She directs Why There Are Words, a national neighborhood of reading series she founded first in Sausalito in 2010, and directs WTAW Press, an independent publisher of exceptional literary books.

I was born and raised in Berkeley, CA. My education took place at U.C. Berkeley and other Bay Area institutions of higher learning. I came to art in 2002 after retiring from a long career in corporate life, and coincidentally, adjunct teaching in higher education. The passion I have discovered for art, and the fulfillment of creating something beautiful, lasting, and meaningful far exceeds anything I have experienced previously. My art is not political, nor is it intended to effect social change through messages, but rather is intended to make people smile and feel good--to know that there is great beauty on this planet. After trying several genres over the first three years of my artistic explorations, I finally settled on oil painting ----- that's what I have become ----- an oil painter. I do landscape and maritime paintings, mostly ----- while I do medium and large studio paintings, I also love plein air painting ----- to paint outdoors, painting on scene, is a very wonderful, inspiring experience (except perhaps when it is cold, windy, and/or raining). The thought of leaving lasting works of beauty for future generations is also very fulfilling to me--a legacy, if you will--a way of giving back the joy that I have experienced.

Ancient Future

One Band, Many Flavors World Fusion Music Ancient Future is the first and longest running musical organization dedicated exclusively to the mission of creating world fusion music. The term was coined by bandleader Matthew Montfort in 1978 to describe Ancient Future’s unusual blend of musical traditions from around the world. BILLBOARD calls the group "trendsetters" for their early contributions to the movement, which seeks to show how people from different cultures can grow by learning from each other. The music of Ancient Future is an exhilarating fusion of exciting rhythms and exotic sounds featuring virtuoso musicians from around the globe. Their music combines contemporary jazz and rock with the irresistible rhythms of Africa, Bali, India, the Middle East and South America, the rich harmonies of European classical music, and the melodic knowledge of the whole world. Nature Watercolors Mixed Media Abstracts Digital Photo Montage Nature is my primary source of inspiration and color my principal mode of expression.I love to combine art and science in natural history watercolors. I can’t imagine more beautiful and bizarre subjects than actual species found in nature. My abstract paintings are guided by internal intuition. I employ multiple layers to suggest interacting energies, dimensions, and the cosmos. I create surreal fantasy scenes (in Photoshop) using bits of my photos and digital artwork. The techniques and possibilities are endless, so each one takes approximately forever! Creating these pieces feels like telling a story or fairytale without words. My paintings, ranging from scientific realism to complete abstraction, have been published as book covers, book illustrations, stickers, cards, prints, and calendars. I am an Artist Member of Marin MOCA, a Signature Member of Marin Society of Artists and President of Golden Gate/Marin Artists.

Paul Aubert

Classically Trained Double Bassist - CU Boulder College of Music, BM in music Performance on Double Bass, experience in rock/funk bands on electric bass Years in High school orchestra/jazz ensemble, College of Marin Orchestra/ COM Big Band Jazz ensemble 2012-2019 and of course, CU Boulder Symphony orchestra under the tutelage of Paul Erhard. Primary bass Teacher in truth - Clarence Stephens - Double Bassist and friend and mentor and hero. Nowadays, I play mostly Jazz, some classical, funk, etc. Inspired by the great bass cats and Jazz leaders - Scott LaFaro, Christian McBride, Bill Evans Trio/ Monk/ Miles/ Coltrane/ Chick Corea - various enembles - John Pattituci is also a bass role model if you will/ Edgar Meyers/ YoYoMa and so forth in other mixed genres - Stanley Clarke, I dig Esperanza Spalding, and Victor Wooten and Joe Dart. Classical Heroes - the usual Bach, Beethoven, Brahms (the 3 B's), Debussy, Stravinsky, and other Uniquely Splendid musicians, notably, Joel Andrews - Harpist and sound Healer, DJ Shadow, MFDoom, and others of this era.

Sue Averell

Visual artist and entrepreneur Sue Averell was born in the US in 1957. She grew up on the sunny beaches of Southern California where she spent much of her time drawing and painting. In the early 80’s Sue attended Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA and eventually moved to San Francisco in the mid 90’s. Sue has co-founded 2 artist organizations; ICB Artists Association and Sausalito Artists @ Work. In 2013 she opened Gallery Sausalito in the historic Industrial Center Building located in Sausalito California. "Using the tools of an artist, a palette of color and inspiration gathered from the world around me, I approach my work with the intent to create a narrative. By experimenting with my technique I am challenged to grow as an artist and that growth inspires me to continue creating", states Averell. The result is a visual story told with color, form, texture and content.
