Beginning Bookbinding: The Buttonhole-Stitch Artist Journal
Learn the buttonhole-stitch book—with its clever exposed cut-out window on the spine — to make an artist journal for your writings and your sketches, or as a wonderful blank gift book for family or friends.
Bookbinding workshop with Derek Bacchus
We will begin with bookbinding basics to familiarize yourself, and for your future independent work: tools, text and cover papers, paper grain, folding, deckled edges, needles, and threads.
You will end up with your own 4 ½” x 6″ journal, and instructions, so you can scale up in many different ways — size, number of signatures, and inventiveness of materials selection and finishing techniques.
Derek Bacchus is a publishing consultant, creative director, designer, photographer, educator, and bookbinder. He has been a magazine art director for a number of titles, including the Wine Spectator, a book publishing design director at Allworth Press, and most recently Chief Product Officer and Publisher at the children’s edtech startup, Know Yourself, in downtown Oakland.
He taught for nearly twenty years, including design history at Parsons School of Design and The Cooper Union (New York); 2-D Design, Information Design and a Senior Seminar in Alphabets and Books at Cooper Union; and bookbinding at the Pont-Aven School of Art in Brittany, France. He has design degrees from Parsons School of Design, and The Yale School of Art.
