Counter/Shading, the inaugural exhibit by 2024 GRO Fellow Taryn Möller Nicoll

Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Taryn Möller Nicoll immigrated to the United States in 2004.  She received her Master of Fine Arts from Louisiana State University and her Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honors from Otis College of Art & Design, Los Angeles.

Taryn’s artwork explores the intersection of fine art, medical science and the human body. Her debut exhibition was at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and her works have been exhibited at John’s Hopkins Welch Medical Library, the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum, and the Shaw Center for the Arts, Baton Rouge.

She has lectured about the fusion of art and science at venues such as the University of Pretoria, South Africa, and at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases, Magdeburg, Germany.

Alongside her studio practice, Taryn is an arts administrator with extensive executive-level experience in nonprofit management, development, community engagement and creative placemaking.

As the Chief Curator and Head of Cultural Projects for the City of Pembroke Pines in Florida, Taryn directed The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery, Studio 18 Art Complex, and visual arts initiatives at the Charles F. Dodge City Center. In this role, Taryn collaborated with artists, educators and culturally significant organizations to design robust annual programs of major exhibitions and inclusive community events.

She is an advocate of racial and cultural justice in the arts, with a history of amplifying narratives that uplift the art and experiences of immigrants, LGBTQIA+ persons, individuals with disabilities, women of color and BIPOC communities.

With a passion for curatorial work, Taryn’s curatorial portfolio

includes exhibition development at venues such as the Beijing Museum of Contemporary Art, the TEDA Museum of Modern Art in Tianjin, and the Center for Contemporary Art Afghanistan. Her curatorial work has been featured on PBS’s TV series ‘Art Loft,’ CBS’ TV series ‘Focus on South Florida,’ WLRN News, The Sun Sentinel, and many more.

A devoted arts educator, Taryn has worked as an adjunct professor of art at Nova Southeastern University and an art instructor at Louisiana State University. With a heart for supporting and funding emerging artists and equitable organizations, she has served as an advisor for grant and investment programs such as the Cultural Institution Program, the Regional Investment Program, the Artist Innovation Award Panel and the Public Art Selection Panel for Broward County Cultural Division.

Taryn lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area where she is a teaching artist at the Healdsburg Center for the Arts, and a curator and researcher at the Beasley Foundation for the sculptural arts.
