ÆRENA Galleries and Gardens invites you to celebrate Function Becomes Art paintings and sculpture by James Armstrong and David Tanych
James Armstrong uses a reductive method of painting – first creating a moment of time which is then scraped, sanded, and worn down to show the seasons passing.
Painting on aluminum as his canvas, each stressing of the landscape reveals a reflective texture underneath that shines through and changes with space and light.
Through his reductive style, Armstrong has perfected his technique of painting that merges traditional landscape painting with a contemporary edge.
David Tanych uses traditional blacksmithing techniques to create larger than life objects which create a fun and playful experience. Using metal and wood as the medium allows the outdoor sculptures to change patina with the passing of time and seasons. Tanych’s sculptures are rustic, familiar, and remind us of favorite memories working with tools or playing our favorite games.
James Armstrong and David Tanych each master their metallic medium in their own unique style. With a worn rustic warmth, each artist reflects on the experience of how the cyclical nature of time brings change and growth by exploring metal as their medium.
