[Pictured: Michael Krondl, “Melt” – photograph on vinyl, 9×17 feet]
In the Center Gallery:
Madeline Hope and Joe Fox: Cast Off both artists reference transformations of form and substance in the context of a keen yet diverse sense of physical materials.
In the Project Space:
Michael Krondl: Melt has two installations in the exhibition directly address the experience of climate change. The first, “Melt” is a large-scale digitally printed photograph of Sólheimajökul, an Iceland glacier that has retreated more than a kilometer over the course of the last decade: a casualty of global warming. The second piece, “Alza le vele” (“raise the sails”) is an ongoing video installation depicting a rising tide, this accompanied by audio from a public swimming pool.
In the Annex:
Zea Morvitz: Drawings and Books – The drawings in the current exhibition originate with graphite frottage (rubbing) on undressed stones. Placing a sheet of paper on a rough rock surface, Morvitz articulates its texture by rubbing graphite crayon across the paper to capture random graphite marks. In the studio she then draws into these marks with ballpoint pen, later achieving dimension by adding watercolor washes. The artist books on display are small, handbound multiples made during the past two years, some containing reproductions of Morvitz’ highly intricate notebook drawings. More at www.zeamorvitz.com.
