The drawings in this series are about seeing San Francisco the way it is: not one piece.
The hills, the peaks, and the valleys of the city mean we have a puzzle on our hands wherever we stand and sometimes only a far-off landmark (like Sutro Tower), can tell us where we are or what we are looking at. I hope the signs and symbols in each drawing —some large, some obscure, and some now defunct—trigger a similar compass in the observer’s mind and perhaps open memories of the puzzle pieces that make up San Francisco.
James Edward Gleason grew up in San Francisco where he plays his saxophones in the tunnels and streets and often captures —in ink —the streets where he wandered as a boy…the streets he still wanders. On Facebook his saxophone sounds and his drawings can be found on a page called James Sax In The Streets
